National Geographic author and photographer, and renowned Cuba expert, Christopher P. Baker is inviting three individuals to join him on an all-Cuba road trip in May, 2020.
Acclaimed by National Geographic as “One of the world’s leading authorities on Cuban travel and culture,” Baker–the Lowell Thomas Award 2008 ‘Travel Journalist of the Year’–has spent three decades as a Cuba specialist. In 1996 he shipped his BMW motorcycle to Cuba and rode more than 7,000 miles to research his Moon Cuba and National Geographic Traveler Cuba guidebooks. He has since published five other travel books about Cuba, has written more than 100 feature articles for leading publications from National Geographic Traveler to Playboy, and has led more than 100 tours of Cuba on behalf of such entities as Jim Cline Photo Tours, Los Angeles Times Expeditions, and National Geographic Expeditions.
Three invited guests will fly by charter from Miami to Santiago de Cuba, at the eastern end of the island. Then, traveling in a 4-passenger Mercedes E200, the group will journey west to Havana and Pinar del Río province, retracing much of the route that Christopher followed on his motorcycle journey in 1996.
Participants will experience Cuba a lo cubano (like a local) as they visit fascinating off-the-beaten-track places and meet memorable Cubans (from renowned artists to humble yet proud farmers)… photograph Cuba like a pro… and provide much-needed support to the Cuban people with stays in private B&Bs, dining at paladares (private restaurants), and contributing to community projects, schools, and individuals in need. Christopher will offer an insider’s insight into Cuba’s complex and spellbinding history, politics, and culture. Plus, the three participants will get to photograph Cuba through the eyes of a National Geographic photographer as Chris tutors them on the art of seeing, composition, and use of light.
Tentative dates for the 14-day/13-night trip are May 10-24, 2020, with an anticipated cost of $4,495.
